The WRO Open Category is a project based competition where students create their own intelligent robotics solutions relating to the current theme. There is no restriction on the balance between LEGO® elements and other materials or software, but the robots must be operated by NXT or EV3 controllers.
At the time of registration teams submit a short video (max. 2 minutes) demonstrating their robot. They also submit a written and illustrated report summarizing what the robot can do, and in which way the robot is unique.
The teams will get a 2m x 2m x 2m booth to display their robot and information. They will hold demonstrations and presentations to the judges and to the general public about their solution.
The 2016 theme is “Rap the Scrap” and in previous seasons the theme has been "Robot Explorers" (WRO 2015) and "Space" (WRO 2014).
To ensure fair competition the Open Category is divided into three age categories; Elementary, Junior and Senior.
